Hyderabad: Over 70 Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) activists were taken into preventive custody on Wednesday as police foiled their attempts to hold a demonstration near Andhra Pradesh Assembly premises here on the issue of categorisation of scheduled castes.
“As a precautionary measure, over 70 MRPS protesters were taken into preventive custody near Nampally railway station itself,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone) VB Kamalasan Reddy said.
The MRPS activists raised slogans and tried to march towards the AP Assembly but police rounded them up and packed them into vehicles.
Security was tightened with deployment of additional forces in and around the Assembly premises as police had earlier refused permission to All India Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi to organise a meeting and ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme today.
Besides, some members of Telangana Vidyarthi Nirudyogula JAC were also taken into preventive custody on Osmania University campus, as they too attempted to hold a ‘Chalo Assembly’ march to protest the Telangana government’s “delay” in filling over one lakh vacancies in different departments, police said.
In view of the ongoing budget sessions of both the AP and Telangana Legislatures, police have already issued orders prohibiting any kind of Assembly, public meeting or procession that has the potential to cause disturbance to public peace and safety within 2-km radius of the Legislature buildings of both the states.
