HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh will soon have its own Telugu university in Rajahmundry on par with Potti Sriramulu Telugu University of Hyderabad. The AP in principle decided to set up a new Telugu University at Rajahmundry, which would be known as Rajamahendravaram from January 1. The move follows months of protest and legal battle with neighbouring state Telangana over the stake in Potti Sriramulu Telugu University. It may recalled that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had announced during Godavari Maha Pushkarams that a new Telugu University would be set up at Rajahmundry. The Potti Sriramulu Telugu University was common to Telangana and AP States. However, the Telangana government declared that it would not allow its AP counterpart to function from the university’s Hyderabad campus and issued a separate notification for admission into various courses. In fact, AP HRD minister Ganta Srinivas Rao petitioned Governor ESL Narasimhan and urged him to intervene in the matter and direct Telangana government to allow them to function from the Hyderabad campus.
However, Telangana government made it clear that it would not allow AP to function from its Hyderabad campus and even stopped the salaries of university staffs working in university’s AP centres. The issue was taken up with Centre and after AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrasekhara Rao came to an understanding that the issue was resolved. It was agreed that AP would pay the salaries of the staffs working in AP centres and also pay the maintenance amount. Earlier, Lok Nayak Foundation chairman and former MP Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad had staged dharna at New Delhi and Rajahmundry demanding early set up of a new Telugu university at Rajahmundry. He demanded the AP government to act promptly and take a decision immediately and establish the new university at Rajahmundry as land and other infrastructure was available.
Meanwhile, AP government has decided to constitute a Task Force Committee to work out an action plan for strengthening of Oriental schools and colleges in the State to preserve and propagate Sanskrit and Telugu languages. Chief Secretary IYR Krishna Rao, held a meeting with the committee members to discuss on preparation of action plan for strengthening of Oriental schools and colleges as well Sanskrit and Telugu languages in the State at secretariat on Tuesday. These institutes would be affiliated to the proposed Telugu university at Rajahmundry, he said. The committee members had reportedly opined that the Oriental colleges should be entrusted to rich temples in the State. They also suggested that Sanskrit related computer based education be introduced and existing vacancies filled up with required staff in the schools and colleges.
