East Godavari Collector H. Arun Kumar has warned fruit traders and farmers of stringent action if they use calcium carbide or any other chemical to ripe the fruit before it naturally ripen on the tree.
“You will be put behind the bars as the High Court has given clear direction to take stringent action on those fruit traders who use the carcinogen calcium carbide to ripen fruits,” he said. Addressing a meeting arranged to enlighten Horticulture farmers at Rajamahendravaram on Wednesday at R&B meeting hall along with Horticulture Deputy Director T.V. Subba Rao, scientist Satyanarayana Reddy and mango growers, the Collector recalled that the State High Court has termed fruit vendors who poison fruits as “worse than terrorists”.
He said that for earning an extra buck, some traders are putting scores of lives at risk. Mr. Kumar also quoted the High Court Chief Justice words that, “till now we were asking children not to eat junk food. We have now reached an unfortunate stage where we have to ask them not to eat fruits also.” The errant traders have to face penal action apart from suspension of their licenses, he said, and directed the Horticulture officials to take up inspections and preventive steps. Mr. Reddy said that Calcium carbide is a chemical compound and is are extremely harmful to the human body.
