Speaking to newsmen here after holding a review meeting at the district police office on Saturday, DGP N Sambasiva Rao said the highway patrol would be strengthened in the district and scientific methods would be implemented to promote road safety.
As part of measures to curb the rate of road mishaps, 39 black spots were identified in the district. The black spots on highways which are more prone to accidents, fall in the limits of 13 police stations. The highest number of five black spots are in the Tanuku rural police limits. Highway patrol vehicles would be supplied to all the 13 police stations by March 15. Each vehicle covers 8 to 14 km of highway, he said.
The DGP also said moving on wrong direction by motorists and road users in areas where dividers were built, to save travel time, was identified as one of the reasons for increase in road mishaps.
Drones would be deployed to effectively monitor the road traffic and promote safety. Emphasis would also be laid on road engineering to avert mishaps. Two mobile apps are being developed to warn motorists about black spots priorly. When a vehicle nears the black spot, the driver receive a voice alert as part of the mobile app. CCTV cameras would also be set up at the black spots as a measure to promote safety, he said.
Sambasiva Rao said no liquor shop would be allowed on national highways from April 1 as per the directive of the Supreme Court to promote road safety. About 40 per cent of penalty amount collected from violators of motor vehicle rules would be used for promotion of road safety, the DGP said.
IG Kripananda Tripathi Ujela, Eluru Range DIG PVS Ramakrishna, SP Bhaskar Bhushan, Additional SP V Ratna and Rajahmundry Urban SP B Rajakumari were also present at the news conference.
