The Rajahmahendravaram Urban police on Tuesday nabbed a person who allegedly committed a series of chain snatchings in the city and surrounding areas.
They recovered 115 gold chains, of which 105 were snatched in the city limits.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Urban SP B. Rajakumari said Mallina Bhaskar Rao, 44, a native of Thorredu village in Rajamahendravaram Rural mandal, allegedly started snatching chains since 2015, and till date had been reportedly involved in 115 cases.
She said the accused initially was in real estate business where he faced losses reportedly owing to his lavish lifestyle.
Bhaskar Rao was also allegedly addicted to gambling and several other vices and started taking loans, she said.
Facing a huge debt, he allegedly decided to snatch chains. The police recovered around 2 kg of gold chains worth Rs. 6 lakh, which were hidden in his farm land in Thorredu village. All chains had been dug out under the supervision of the VRO.
