Hyderabad: Unidentified persons stole gold ornaments weighing 126 tolas and Rs 5 lakh in cash from a woman passenger on the Godavari Express heading to Secunderabad from Visakhapatnam.
The worth of the stolen property would be around Rs 45 lakh, police said, adding that the passenger, T. Vani, a resident of Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar, was returning to the city along with her relative after attending a housewarming ceremony at her brother’s house in Rajahmundry.
She had boarded a train at Rajahmundry railway station on Wednesday night and woke up around 3.35 am. Before getting off the train at Secunderabad railway station, she checked the suitcase only to find that the gold ornaments and cash were missing, Railways In charge Superintendent of Police (Secunderabad division) S Rajendra Prasad said.
She, along with her relative, had been travelling in the air-conditioned apartment in Godavari Express when the theft took place, he said, adding that the incident could have occurred after midnight.
“With the help of our counterparts in Andhra Pradesh, we will collect footage from surveillance cameras installed at railway stations from Rajahmundry to Secunderabad stations to identify those involved in the incident and nab them,” he said.
