RAJAHMUNDRY: The ongoing lockdown to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus may have caused trouble to many, but it has helped a man from Kerala to reunite with his family after 17 years. The man, who is suffering from schizophrenia, was found by Rajahmundry police on the Godavari bund during a special patrol to enforce lockdown in the town. The police shifted him to a temporary shelter for the homeless.
According to police, the man identified as Ramesam, 41, left his house at Thrissur in Kerala in 2003. As he is a schizophrenic, he lost his way and wandered all over South India, mostly spending time in temples and ashrams. All efforts by his family to trace him did not yield any result all these years.
Ramesam came to Rajahmundry recently and he had been staying near a temple on Godavari bund. When the lockdown was announced, police shifted homeless and beggars to temporary shelters. During a special patrol to enforce the lockdown, the police found Ramesam sitting alone and shifted him to BC hostel, where a temporary shelter was created for the homeless and migrant workers.
As part of district mental health programme to beat the lockdown troubles among migrant workers, psychiatrist Dr Vasu, clinical psychiatrist Dr Sudarshini and psychologist Dr Sudheer Babu noticed that Ramesam is suffering from schizophrenia.
