RAJAHMUNDRY: Around 247 inmates and also a few jail staff of Rajahmundry Central Prison were tested positive on Thursday. The jail authorities suspect that the virus contacted the inmates through remand prisoners.
According to sources, tests were conducted to around 900 inmates out of 1640. Of which, 247 were tested positive, the medical department authorities said.
When contacted the Rajahmundry Central Prison superintendent Raja Rao told TOI that they were now identifying the staff of Jail and also the under trial prisoners.
“We got the information about positive cases of 247 out of 900. Now, we are going to conduct tests for the remaining 740 inmates too,” the superintendent said.
The central prison has around 800 under trial prisoners. Now the jail authorities are planning to vacate one barrack completely and accommodate the positive prisoners in it.
