Godavari water released to delta canals

KAKINADA: Godavari water was let out into three delta canals–Eastern Delta, Central Delta and Western Delta– to East Godavari and West Godavari districts on Tuesday.

Irrigation officials released the water after performing the poojas. As high as 19,000 cusecs of water was released through Polavaram Project Spillway. Of these, the officials released 3,000 cusecs of water.

Irrigation headworks executive engineer Srinivasa Rao said the release of waters is gradually being increased. Rajamahendravaram MP Bharat Ram inaugurated the release of waters at the Eastern Arm at Dowleswaram Barrage.

He said there would be no shortage of water even for small fields. A 20-TMCs capacity storage tank has been constructed at Polavaram Project and the project would supply water to the fields. Union Ministry for Water Resources has responded favourably to the state’s plea to release funds for  the polavaram project, he said.

Irrigation chief engineer Pulla Rao, superintendent engineer Sriramakrishna and YSRC Rajamahendravaram rural coordinator Chandana Nageswar were present.

Deputy chief minister Dharmana Krishnadas has directed officials to speed up the process of linking the rivers Vamsadhara and Nagavali.

Reviewing the irrigation project works with the officials at Srikakulam collectorate on Tuesday, the minister said the government took up the river linkage programme as a prestigious irrigation project. The minister called for another meeting on the irrigation projects on June 19 at the Srikakulam collectorate.

The minister said the officials should also gear up for release of water from the Vamsadhara project for kharif crops in July. He advised the officials to take the help of NREGS beneficiaries for any labour work for the irrigation project. Officials said the Package 87 and 88 works of the Vamsadhara project works have reached the final stage.
